Prescription Error
Large pharmacy companies have access to a complete record of what medications have been dispensed to a particular individual. That puts the pharmacist in a position to recognize if a doctor makes a mistake in prescribing a type of medication or dosage that might contradict another prescription written by another doctor.
Prescription medication errors fall into two main categories - dispensing the wrong medication or giving the patient the wrong dosage. A pharmacist has a duty to his customers to make sure that the proper medication is dispensed pursuant to the doctor's prescription or order. The pharmacist must make sure he understands what has been written, and if he doesn't understand it, he must consult with the doctor to verify what the prescription was written for.
In some cases, pharmacy error can occur when the pharmacist fails to account for known drug allergies or harmful drug interactions with other medications the patient is taking.
